<br />
I've been thinking so much about the actual Camino experience. Not the preparation or talking about it but the actual doing it. I think it's going to have lots of letting go. Letting go of the way we imaging it will be. Letting go of our struggles that weigh us down so that we can be freed up for whatever lies ahead. It's going to be about taking it one step at a time and just showing up.<br />
<br />
We are 16 days away from leaving the country and heading to Europe. I'm both really excited and really nervous. It is daunting to think about walking 540 miles in a foreign land with a ten year old. But when I think about just taking a little adventuresome walk with Sam for just one day it seems so much more doable. After all we are walking one day at a time. We are actually going to divide our days into segments so we will just be doing 2 - 3 walks lasting 2 - 3 hours each. Walking for 8 weeks sounds impossible, but we walk 2 hours like it's nothing. That's what we are going to keep doing from here on out.<br />
<br />
I think we are preparing as best we can. Last night we slept in our sleeping bags with eye masks. We are trying to use all of the clothing and items we will take ahead of time--towels and soap, for example. It's easy to get bogged down in the little stuff. Is 3 pairs of socks enough? Do we get a European sim card here or when we arrive? Should we be planning more of our route or just allow it unfold naturally? Do we have all of our paperwork? There are loads of things to think about. This can be a burden. We are trying to squeeze so much into the next 2 weeks!<br />
<br />
If you're local please join us this Saturday, May 18, noon - 4 p.m. for a Farewell Fiesta. Everyone should see a doctor before making lifestyle changes. This is my journey.<br />
<br />
So I sat on the couch for most of January. Eating leftover Christmas cookies and making art. And then one day I thought, "This is not going to get me over the Pyrenees Mountains or finishing over 500 miles of hiking!"<br />
<br />
I was super self conscious about my lack of fitness, but I knew the only way to change that was to start moving. I started walking in the mall after I dropped Sam off at school a couple mornings a week. Yep, I became a mall walker. I was slow and steady--just one foot in front of the other.<br />
<br />
Then in mid February we started our "long" weekend hikes. We started with 1.6 miles. It was cold, rainy, and snowy that first day. We invited others to join us, but we weren't surprised when we were alone. If I wasn't worried about making it over the mountains and walking 10 - 12 miles a day for 2 months I wouldn't have been out there either.<br />
<br />
The next step was finally showing up at the Y. The goal there was to gain cardio endurance and core strength. I was given a plan to work by a very kind young woman, and I showed up. Sometimes that's the hardest part! I showed up 3 - 4 times a week for the next couple months. I felt less foolish and self conscious. I actually started to take my weighted backpack once or twice a week--usually 14 - 16 pounds on the stair stepper and then to the treadmill for a couple of walking miles--which seems really easy after 20 + minutes of stair climbing!<br />
<br />
Our weekend hikes have become longer. We have varied the amount of hills, number of miles, length of time we stay out. We've been able to use the time to try out a bunch of gear, too--packs, water bottles and water bladders, trekking poles, socks, shoes, rain gear, hats, sunglasses, underwear (super important to avoid chaffing!), and performance wear pants, shirts, and hoodies. We've been out in a variety of weather from snow and 30s to rain in 40s - 50s, and sun into the 70s.<br />
<br />
I'm not going to focus on the stuff we didn't do because some stuff didn't work for us. This is OUR camino. It will be as unique as we are. I thought we would do more long hikes--12 miles, but instead we have done loads of 6 - 8 miles hikes. From here my thought is we will do a 6 - 8 mile hike then have lunch, followed by a 4 - 6 mile hike. I believe are well prepared for this.<br />
<br />
And I could not end this without telling you that yoga and stretching have been an essential part of this process for me. I feel as grateful for yoga as I did when I first discovered it. Pigeon is opening and relaxing my hips in a beautiful way. Lots of work on my back in reclined twists, bridge, happy baby, rocking, legs up the wall to name a few. I am not taking a yoga mat, but I'm sure I will do tons of stretching along the way.<br />
<br />
There are a few weeks left, and I don't know for sure that this is going to be enough, but I do know that we have prepared while keeping it fun most of the time. I feel strong and hopeful that this camino is ours and we have been walking it for a few months now--since the day I decided to get off the couch! Buen camino!Brave Mimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06261146559412239629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-301043448864221573.post-2144137758622767592019-05-06T08:24:00.002-07:002019-05-06T08:24:32.334-07:00Three Week Count DownWe leave 3 weeks from tomorrow. I feel both some panic and excitement. I think that's probably how a person is supposed to feel when they are taking there child along with them on a fairly extreme trip.<br />
<br />
This morning after I took Sam to school I went to the Y to workout. I did not take my pack, and everything seemed smoother and easier than it has. I used the stair master a level higher for the full 20 minutes. I added weights on 3 of the machines I use. I'm feeling confident and strong today! <br />
<br />
When I arrived home I received an amazingly thoughtful and generous package in the mail from a veteran pilgrim and new friend.<br />
<br />
I'm searching for all the small pouches I own to keep things organized in my pack. <br />
<br />
I'm planning for our going away party.<br />
<br />
I'm working on an extensive to do list.<br />
<br />
I'm feeling so much gratitude as I tick off the very long list of names of people who have made it possible for us to get to this point. I'm overwhelmed by the names of old friends and new friends who have all been part of the preparation part of this adventure.<br />
<br />
I think this is exactly how 3 weeks out is supposed to look at feel for me. While I'm gaining physical strength and confidence I'm also moving inward toward my thoughts and heart. This is already a deeply moving experience. I am continuing the journey.<br />
<br />
And Sam. . .<br />
<br />
He had a great time leading the way, talking a great deal, and showing no whining while we trained this weekend. <br />
<br />
He also has been tender. I know he is evolving, too, but without the mature vocabulary to assign it. So when he cried hard last night about the death of his beloved beta fish, Waffles, I knew there was more. I just stayed present and silent. Change is always hard for him. Loss and disappointment overwhelm in an honest way that I prefer to avoid. I wonder how much of his growth this summer will be when I can be present and silent. <br />
<br />
Sam has a wisdom that takes my breath away. He is the logical pessimist to my impulsive optimist. We often use humor to meet in the middle. I believe humor will get us through the tough times.Brave Mimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06261146559412239629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-301043448864221573.post-66322835117249281082019-03-26T06:30:00.000-07:002019-03-26T06:30:16.295-07:00Happy Hour This Friday!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I had anticipated that we would do one 8 mile hike this weekend. That wasn't in the cards for us, but we did do 2 hikes that were new to us. On Saturday we did 5.6 miles on the towpath in Cleveland Metroparks. It was an industrial area, and it was great to see the way that was integrated into rest spots and artwork. We loved the nature center where just back off East 49th Street. We also enjoyed bowls of pho.<br />
<br />
On Sunday we went to the Wetmore Trail, which gave us great up and down experiences. We were also grateful for trekking poles here as muddy steep hills abounded! We were sad to not see any horses on the trail, as we saw five horse trailers in the parking lot and plenty of horse poop! From the parking lot round trip was 4.5 miles. It felt so good to see that I am gaining strength and cardio endurance, but I still have a long way to go!Brave Mimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06261146559412239629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-301043448864221573.post-43460471722242850222019-03-19T10:44:00.000-07:002019-03-19T10:44:51.556-07:00The Lost Is FoundAnd there is great rejoicing!<br />

We got trekking poles, and this was the perfect week to break them in! The Mingo trail has lots of ups and downs, and it was especially muddy. With a bit extra in Naturerealm and extra time on the running path we completed about 6 miles. It was good to practice losing the quote and using my scarf on Sam's arms. I think those little things like a scarf or a buff will make a big difference for us. We each purchased a buff from Miss Mercedes, where I worked last summer. Now we are starting to use them!</div>

Today we hiked a route that had been planned by Sam. He has biked this route before several times. He loves the giant sword, and finding the giant chair was a surprise. We saw tons of birds along the way. We stopped many times to admire birds and industrial decay. Sam declared that he was a walking machine fueled by gummy bears! We walked 6.75 miles or 10.8 km.Brave Mimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06261146559412239629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-301043448864221573.post-36379134759790555302019-03-02T06:00:00.000-08:002019-03-26T06:01:38.885-07:00Week 3 Camino Training<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Today we went 6 long cold miles on the towpath near our house. We entertained ourselves with spotting animals and telling stories about mutant muskrats who take over Barberton. Sam was a trooper! At the toughest point we saw a group of 4 deer eating and coming closer to us. I have never been so close to free deer in my life. There is a saying that the Camino provides. At the moment when we were most tired of the wind blowing in our faces and tired legs the deer were pure magic!<br />

We will be leaving May 29, and we will be returning July 26.<br />
Two full months of hiking and hanging out with Sam.<br />
I'm amazed by how we are already being changed by our Camino, and I'm anticipating stronger minds, bodies, and spirits!Brave Mimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06261146559412239629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-301043448864221573.post-74292707882701762142019-02-25T05:47:00.000-08:002019-03-26T06:31:42.497-07:00First the Complaining, Then the JoySam is really good at complaining. I say he is my human Eyore. I know that this trip is meant for us because first he complains about everything--distance, temperature, clothing, parents, snacks, and anything else he can think of! And after all of that is over there is joy! Sometimes it's subtle. You have to know how to read him. There is a contentment in his spirit and a bounce in his step. It's lovely to witness.<br />
<br />
Honestly this scares me a bit. I'm a start with the joy kind of person. Part of my Camino preparation is preparing for many days of complaining and learning to really celebrate the joy!<br />
<br />
<br />
P.S. I wrote this several weeks ago, and I have been really surprised by how much more acceptance I am witnessing as we prepare more. There is an inner fortitude in this small boy that is starting to glow. Sometimes I am warmed by it when I need it most!Brave Mimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06261146559412239629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-301043448864221573.post-1498760815230454342019-02-24T05:33:00.000-08:002019-03-26T05:40:32.879-07:00Week 2 of Camino Training<br />

<i><b>"Mom, I'm worried your expectations are too high for this trip." Sam, January 2019</b></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We were sitting together on the couch when Sam uttered these words to me. My initial reaction was to laugh, and then my heart twinged inside my chest. He is absolutely right, and I know it. I have had high expectations my whole life, and this trip is no different.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And with high expectations there is the vulnerability of potential (even probable) disappointment.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Honestly I thought by now that we would have many people from around the world following our adventure planning and preparation. I thought we would have dozens, maybe hundreds of people signed up for our mailing list. I expected to have dozens of people come to our house to buy cards at the event Cards for the Camino. I expected that our authenticity would encourage thousands in donations. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This has not been the reality. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Am I disappointed? Sure. I doubt myself as I invest so much of my resources in creating this adventure over earning more money. We are making great sacrifices and living on a shoestring in order to manifest our camino. In my heart I wonder if it will be worth it. I worry we might not be able to actually do it. There is no neat and tidy way to prepare and plan, and fear could devour the joy.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But that isn't the end of it. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have already met amazing people because of Fifty and Ten. I have been able to tell our story to hundreds of people. I have been blown away by the generosity of a handful of people. {Thank you! Thank you! Thank you doesn't seem nearly enough.} I have started to tell Sam that we have another "Camino Miracle" as people share ideas, money, and equipment. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's extraordinary to be able to live a life like this. There is power in realizing that we are already on our Camino as we begin to prepare for the tangible journey.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Along with high expectations I have been gifted the capacity to bounce back quickly from disappointment. That might be the most powerful tool in my personal strength arsenal. I can say with great confidence that I am resilient.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And that is the gift that I wish to impart to Sam. I know he would rather avoid expectation than be disappointed. He never asks Santa for specific gifts so that he won't be disappointed. He avoids new experiences, so he won't be disappointed. I am trusting that our Fifty and Ten Camino adventure will fill him with his own high expectations, a capacity to move quickly through disappointment, and a steely resilience to carry with him through life.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
{Extra gratitude today for everyone who has supported this Fifty and Ten in so many ways. We could not do this without you.}</div>

<br />
It's hard to believe that in five short months we will be heading to the Camino de Santiago. Actually we are on our way there every day that we take walks, read books, make art, earn money and talk about what we hope to do. We are on our way down the path of life.<br />
<br />
Today, on January 1, 2019, we took a 2 mile stroll on a metro park path. Because of the strong winds and rain overnight we encountered many downed branches, limbs, and even a couple trees.<br />

Sam didn't seem too impressed with his big gift from Santa, but now that he has started to adjust the straps and check it out himself it's growing on him! This is a great pack for a small person getting ready for the Camino! {It's starting to get real, real, real!}Brave Mimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06261146559412239629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-301043448864221573.post-43934243760640778142018-10-30T16:26:00.000-07:002018-10-30T16:26:43.178-07:00Boats and Blooms Opening This Friday<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
A highlight of my summer has been combing the small beach--our magic beach--for beach glass. <br />
<br />
Over the course of a whole summer I have collected half a sandwich bag of small glass bits and a variety of life lessons.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the lessons and reminders:<br />
<br />
It's a task that requires one to be fully present. If we are distracted we miss the little treasures.<br />
<br />
Some days bear no fruit. Just keep showing up.<br />
<br />
Some treasures are unexpected--like lucky stones, fossils, beautiful stones, and small geodes. Enjoy the unexpected treasures.<br />
<br />
Dark days make it harder to spot treasures. This makes them more precious.<br />
<br />
Some days we expect more than we receive. Whatever we receive is a gift--even the empty hand.<br />
<br />
We get to choose where we assign value. We do not need to follow the norms of value, beauty and treasure.<br />
<br />
What lessons are you learning from simple tasks and rituals?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

It is a traditional pilgrimage to visit the Cathedral of St. James. Pilgrims have walked this way for many different purposes for more than a thousand years.<br />
<br />
In 2019, I turn 50 years old, and Sam turns 10 years old. We plan to hike 500 miles (800 km) from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago. This is our adventure! We want to share it all with you! We want to invite you in as we plan, travel, and are changed by the experience.<br />
<br />
Please consider how you will join the journey, too.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned as there will be so much more soon.Brave Mimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06261146559412239629noreply@blogger.com0
